About twelve years ago, when I created virtual worlds writing VRML scripts, there was no such thing as a full form avatar. Back in those days, you viewed a virtual world through the eyes of a pseudo-avatar. Now, on websites such as Secondlife and InWorldZ. you can totally create an avatar that suits your fancy.

The one aspect of avatars that has caught my interest is faces. You can point and click your way to creating your avatar, but there is no easy way to have your actual, real life face on your avatar. After extensive study and a few thousand hours of practice and experimentation, I have finally reached a point where I have become rather good at sculpting avatar faces.
